Environmental protection in foundation engineering.

We are contributing to mitigating the negative consequences of climate change with our specialist civil engineering technologies, which we are continuously developing. We keep current environmental issues in mind in all our decisions. Whether this is responding to the increasing scarcity of raw materials, or switching to low-CO2 processes or environmentally friendly injection agents: We establish sustainable solutions, thus taking responsibility.

Our environmentally friendly processes

Pile foundations: Reducing emissions

Our slim Greenpile displacement piles, such as Frankipfahl NG® or Atlaspfahl, require substantially less concrete than alternative pile systems. The displacement method also means that no drill cuttings are created. Additional transport and third-party recycling are therefore no longer necessary. As a result, you lower emissions, save costs, reduce traffic and minimise the impact on people living near the construction site. This also increases the likelihood of your project being approved.

Subsoil improvement: The use of natural materials

Vibro replacement is a particularly sustainable process that does not require the use of cement. The use of natural materials like gravel and crushed stone, which are already present on site, makes this subsoil improvement particularly environmentally friendly.

Cut-off walls: Working with the in-situ soil

Recycled building elements are cost-effective for you. The in-situ soil is used in the soil mixing method, which saves soil transportation. Using a frame-led mixing paddle, we mix the soil with comparatively little cement slurry to create a grouted soil body. Load-bearing elements are set into the fresh grouted soil body to realise lining walls with low deformations.

Cut-offs: Environmentally neutral sealing

Cut-offs are used for the surface sealing of construction pit bases against vertically rising groundwater. The soft gel injection floor slab is a particularly environmentally friendly process that we produce economically, safely in terms of execution and with an excellent CO2 footprint. Our environmentally neutral biological soft gel is one of three soft gels with general type approval from the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt).

Energy piles: Climate-friendly geothermal energy

If you need a pile foundation anyway, then the additional costs for near-surface geothermal energy are low. We are happy to advise you on the planning of energy piles. They can be used to heat the building in the winter and cool it in the summer.

Soil decontamination: Binding contaminants.

To prevent contaminants from contaminated soils from entering the groundwater, we can secure them using the jet-grouting method with secant jet-grouted columns. The contaminants are bound with jet-grouted sealing blocks, providing sustainable protection for the groundwater. Later, the stabilised soil can be transported, sent to soil processing plants or properly disposed of.

Large hole boring: Replacing contaminated soil

We replace contaminated soil with uncontaminated soil by drilling large, cased, secant boreholes. The drill heads for the replacement boreholes have a diameter of up to 2m. The excavated material is then sent to soil treatment plants.

Other environmental friendly measures:

  • Use of CO2-reduced cements: e.g. DSV underpinning in Wiesbaden
  • Focus on short delivery routes for material orders
  • Focus on energy efficiency: Use of modern, low-emission equipment, partial use of electrical equipment e.g. for construction in existing buildings, switching off the engine during breaks, measuring, evaluating and optimizing consumption. Stump-Franki has a certified energy management system according to ISO 50001.

Support for your certification

We calculate the CO2 footprint of the processes we have selected for you using special software such as the EFFC Carbon Calculator from the European Foundation Engineering Federation (EFFC). This enables us to support you in applying for your sustainability certificates such as DGNB.

Case study

The cost savings and CO2 savings from foundation optimization can be enormous, as the following project example illustrates. For the foundation of a silo in Wilhelmshaven with a total load of about 680 MN, we were able to convince the client of a deep foundation on Frankipfähle NG®. We can also plan your excavation project economically and ecologically from the ground up or optimize it accordingly - for example, with the groundwater-compatible replacement of classic jet-grouted bases with soft gel injection bases with bio-soft gel; without the use of cement.
